Playa Bacocho is a gorgeous beach in Puerto Escondido that has long stretches of white sand stretching all the way to Mirador Punta Colorada.
The beach is also connected via the headland to Playa Coral which is another popular beach in Puerto Escondido.
Where is Playa Bacocho
Playa Bacocho is located approximately 4 kilometers from central Puerto Escondido and is easily accessible.
How to get to Playa Bacocho
Playa Bacocho can be reached either by car or scooter which will take approximately 10 minutes from the town center.
Alternatively, if you chose to walk it would take approximately 1 hour. If you don’t have your own transport you can grab a taxi to take you here for approximately 100 pesos.
What to do at Bacocho beach
Playa Bacocho is one of the best beaches in Puerto Escondido and there are a number of activities to do.
Swim and relax
On a good weather day relaxing on the beach at playa, Bacocho is one of the best things to do. There is an endless stretch of beach to set up an umbrella away from the crowd making for a relaxing day or afternoon.
Usually, playa Bacocho is also calm and great for swimming however at times the currents and waves can get quite strong so we’d always advise chatting to one of the lifeguards before entering the water.
If you have a mask and snorkel it’s also worth getting in and going for a snorkel around the headland but it’s advised that you are a confident swimmer if you wish to do this.
Although there isn’t a lot of coral the headland offers the opportunity to spot some colorful fish hiding in the rocky outcrops.
Walk to Playa Coral
Playa Coral is a beach that is located a short walk from Playa Bacocho and it’s an absolute must-visit. To get here you’ll head to the southeast and make your way around the headland.
Ensure to keep an eye on the tide and make sure the conditions are right, but it will take you no longer than 10 minutes to reach this little hidden paradise.
This is the easiest and best free way to get to Playa Coral so if you were planning on visiting while in Puerto it is advised to visit it on the same day that you visit Playa Bacocho.
Experience baby turtle release
The baby turtle release center in Playa Bachocho attracts visitors from all over town who are looking to enjoy this awesome experience.
The camp is open at 5 pm and is great for turtle conservation as most of the sea turtle population is endangered.
To release a turtle of your own it will cost a 150 donation which goes towards the turtle conservation and maintaining the camp.
Bacocho movie night
Depending on the time of the year you visit and the day of the week there are movie nights that happen on the beach which are open to the public.
As of 2023, they are running movie nights from 7 pm every night outside of Club de Playa Cocoas and anyone is welcome to attend.
As the theatre is attached to the venue they do appreciate if you order drinks or food from the menu however it is not compulsory.
Visit Club de Playa Cocos
If you’re thirsty or hungry and want to grab some food Club de Playa Cocos is located on Bacocho beach and it is a great venue to grab a drink or food.
There are tables and chairs located on the beach itself however if you wish to use these in addition to the pool and other facilities you’ll need to pay 600 pesos.
Alternatively the bar/restaurant area is open to the public and there is no minimum consumption so you can consume whatever you want to with no pressure.
Best time to visit Playa Bacocho
We find that the best time to visit Playa Bacocho is in the afternoon and if you’re looking to experience the turtle release you will want to arrive no later than 4.50 pm.
The beach is a great spot for sunset and there is an endless stretch of sand to perch up and have your own little slice of paradise.
The rocky headland between Playa Coral and Playa Bacocho makes for an awesome spot for sunset if you are here at this time.
If you come here on a Wednesday you can watch the sunset and then enjoy the free movie night on the beach.

Regardless if you’re looking to relax on the beach, go for a swim or walk to Playa Coral there are a number of fun things to do here.
Although we would recommend visiting in the afternoon, regardless of when you visit you’ll be sure to have a good experience and we would highly recommend not missing out on this awesome beach.
