The Puerto Escondido surf is one of the biggest reasons that visitors to Oaxaca and the purpose of this guide is to point you in the direction of where you should surf based on your experience level.
Puerto Escondido has been a major hotspot for surfing since the early 50s but it really took off in the 80s and 90s with the advancement in surfboard builds.
The Puerto Escondido surf attracts some of the best surfers in the world but that is not to say that the town is not suitable for surfers from complete beginners all the way to professionals.
Puerto Escondido surfing season
Depending on what time you are planning on visiting Puerto Escondido determines the quality and the size of the surf.
Being further south around the Oaxacan coast results in a different swell to that of the northern parts of Mexico making the best time to surf in Puerto Escondido a little different from other areas.
Summer (May-September)
The best time of year for Puerto Escondido surfing for experienced surfers is in summer. Southerly winds hit the coast between May to August leading to some huge waves and shore breaks on Playa Zicatela.
The morning is the best time as after midday it gets quite hot and the waves die off a little.
Winter (November-April)
November offers a good balance of large waves and smaller waves meaning that it is the best time of year all around.
Where To Surf In Puerto Escondido
Depending on your experience level will determine where the most suitable Puerto Escondido waves are for you to surf. From already broken small white water all the way up to 40-ft monsters there is something for everyone in Puerto Escondido.
Playa Zicatela Surf – Best Puerto Escondido waves for pros
The Zicatela surf has some of the most famous waves in the world and is known as the Mexican Pipeline. This is due to the fact that it has waves that can get up to a whopping 40 feet and attracts some of the best surfers from around the world.
These waves are only for the best surfers and should definitely not be attempted if you are completely competent in your surfing ability.
We are not joking when we say that these waves are big, there are videos online showing the sheer size of these waves and they are no joke.
If you’re not a confident swimmer it’s best not to even go near the Zicatela surf as you’ll see ‘no swimming’ signs up all over the beach.
La Punta Surf – Best Puerto Escondido waves for intermediates
If you consider yourself to be an intermediate surfer then the La Punta surf is a little calmer due to being located next to the headland.
This is not to say that the surf here doesn’t pump at times. Depending on the time of year and the conditions you’ll find that sometimes the biggest swell and a lot of the pros will be down here as well.
Due to this, we’d highly recommend being a semi-experienced surfer and making sure you check out the conditions before getting in the water.
The surf down here can get some pretty big rips and the left breaks can be very quick. On the smaller days, the surf schools will be here but generally, it is an intermediate spot.
Playa Carrizalillo Surf – Best Puerto Escondido waves for beginners
The Carrizalillo surf is by far the best place to learn to surf for complete beginners as these Puerto Escondido waves are smaller due to the fact that the beach is located in a cove.
It is a gorgeous beach and this is where the surf schools normally come. Beginners will learn off the already broken waves closer to the shore.
There are two different breakpoints that come into the bay however they are nothing in comparison to the power that the La Punta and Zicatela surf brings.
