The Bioluminescence in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca is a sight to behold and you won’t want to miss visiting a bioluminescent lagoon to see the plankton while you’re in town.
Immersing yourself in the water and running your hand through the water while watching the plankton light up the water with a stunning blue hue is mesmerizing and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
What is Bioluminescence?
According to the National Ocean Service, Bioluminescence is defined as ‘the production and emission of light by a living organism’.
Bioluminescence is the result of a chemical reaction that produces light energy from an organism. The molecule that is needed to make it occur is luciferin which reacts with oxygen to make light.
These organisms can control when they glow by maintaining their chemistry and although it’s not known for every species it is typically used to lure or detect prey as well as being used as a means of communication.
The Puerto Escondido Bioluminescent Lagoons
The bioluminescence in Puerto Escondido can be experienced either in Laguna de Manialtepec or Chacaha as they both have bioluminescent dinoflagellates – a type of plankton.
Although in theory, you could rent a kayak or paddleboard to experience bioluminescence in Puerto Escondido yourself it is advised to go with a certified tour operator on a bioluminescence tour.
Usually, there are tents set up in darker waters that block out any artificial light which results in the best bioluminescence experience possible and these can only be reached by boat.
Laguna de Manialtepec Bioluminescence
Laguna de Manialtepec is only 20 minutes away from central Puerto Escondido so for the convenience of the location it is the most preferred lagoon to experience the phenomenon.
With that being said the bioluminescence here can only be experienced at certain times of the year when Laguna de Manialtepec is connected with the ocean allowing the plankton to seek refuge in the lagoon.
In order for the optimal experience of this wonder, you need to go at night, preferably in the new phase of the moon.
Chacahua Bioluminescence Lagoon
Chacahua is a little bit further away and it will take approximately 1.5 hours each way to enjoy the experience here. The difference with the bioluminescence in Chacahua is that it is present here all year round so depending on when you visit Puerto you will still be able to enjoy the experience.
A tour to experience the bioluminescence here picks you up at around 7 pm and returns you at around 11 pm.
In order to get to where the best spots to see it are, the boat will take you there before allowing you to get in the water and swim.
The tour we recommend has the flexibility to go to either Chacahua or Laguna Manialtepec and will take you to the lagoon where there is more bioluminescence present at the time of your visit.
Zipolite & Mazunte Bioluminescence
This a phenomenon at select times that you can appreciate at Zipolite Beach. To enhance your experience, consider an optional tour to explore the enchanting Manialtepec or Chacahua.
The added cost for transportation, approximately 1800 pesos, opens doors to a world of radiant marvels. Witness the ocean aglow with shimmering lights and embark on an illuminating journey, elevating your coastal escape to a level of enchantment and discovery like no other.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
When is the bioluminescence in Puerto Escondido season?
The best time of year for the Puerto Escondido bioluminescence season is usually from July through to September as the water is warm and the plankton is active however it can be witnessed all year round.
A few factors such as the water temperature and plankton presence play an important role in how much bioluminescence is present.
The other factor to take into consideration is if the moon is too bright it can make it harder to see the bioluminescence. This is why tours have tents for you to get in so that the moon doesn’t drown out the blue glow.
How much is a bioluminescence tour?
There are a number of companies that will allow you to experience the Puerto Escondido bioluminescence phenomenon in Oaxaca however we would always recommend booking it with a certified tour operator with the appropriate licenses.
In addition to having the appropriate licenses, you can rest assured that a certified tour operator will go to the safest places and give you the confidence to get in the water and witness the spectacle up close.
A certified bioluminescence tour can cost anywhere from US $30 to US $50 per person depending on the tour operator and where you book it.
The companies we recommended charge up to US $35 per person however we would recommend booking it at Viator as they often offer discounts on the experience allowing you a premium experience for less.
Are there crocodiles in the bioluminescent lagoon?
Yes, there are some crocodiles that reside in the lagoon as they are part of the natural ecosystem. Though you need to be aware of their presence, they are rarely interested in humans and would much rather avoid you.
Due to their presence, it’s important to go with a certified tour operator as you will steer well clear of their nesting areas to ensure your safety.
If that scares you from getting into the water it is important to note that swimming is not compulsory and the experience is equally enjoyable whether or not you choose to do so.
Moon Phases For Bioluminescence
In the new moon phase, the night sky reaches its darkest point as the moon positions itself between Earth and the Sun, presenting its unlit side. Bioluminescent organisms thrive in these conditions, with their displays more noticeable due to reduced ambient light.
As the moon advances from new to the first quarter, the illuminated crescent grows, adding ambient light to the night sky. Despite this, the waxing moon’s early phases still offer relatively dim conditions compared to the fully illuminated full moon.
During the full moon, observing bioluminescence becomes challenging as the night sky brightens. However, certain bioluminescent organisms may persist, especially in areas with minimal light pollution.
The waning gibbous to the last quarter sees diminishing illuminated moon portions, resulting in darker skies, potentially enhancing bioluminescence visibility.
With the new moon’s return, the lunar cycle restarts, providing darker skies. The relationship between moon phases and bioluminescence varies based on specific organisms and environmental conditions.
Some synchronize displays with moonlight, while others prefer increased activity during darker nights, regardless of the moon phase. Ongoing research promises detailed insights into these relationships.

Hi! I was wondering if this was a good time to see bioluminesence? Jan 28 2023
Hi Lauren! There has definitely been a bunch around lately. Usually the tours this time of year go to Chacahua as it is more present there. When were you thinking of going? Feel free to send us a message and I’ll check with the operator we normally recommend that only likes operating if they think the conditions are good.
