If you have some spare time and have a scooter or bike driving along the Colotepec river up past Mirador el malucano makes for a great half-day outing.
Unlike the Western side of the river which will take you up to Santa María Colotepec, the Eastern side will take you through fields and along the river giving you plenty of places to stop to take a picture while being surrounded by gorgeous Mexican farmland.
Where is the Colotepec river
The Colotepc river is just to the West of La Punta and can easily be reached via a scooter or bike. The Colotepec runs all the way up to Colotepec from La Barra.
How to get here
The best way to start the journey along the river is to navigate to Mirador el malucano and then follow along beside the river.
Mirador el malucano
Mirador el malucano is a great spot to grab a photo as it overlooks the Colotepec river and the surrounding scenery makes you truly feel like you are in Mexico.
Totolápam and beyond
As you carry on driving along the river it will take you through Totolápam, El Camarón, El Banco all the way up to San José el Quequestle.
These small towns make for an interesting experience and you’ll definitely turn heads as it’s rare for tourists to be spotted here. In Totolápam the population as of 2020 was only 123 people.
Although these towns don’t normally top the list of places to visit the drive here is the best part as you drive through fields with gorgeous mountain scenery in the background.
Final thoughts
Without belittling these gorgeous little towns this drive would not be on the top of our list however if you have a spare morning or afternoon and are staying in Puerto for a bit of time you may consider getting out and exploring here.
