Puerto Escondido has become one of the best destinations for a nice holiday on the Pacific coast of Oaxaca. However, the weather can be challenging as the temperature goes up to 35 ºC and it’s very humid.
We have created a list with recommendations of what to pack if you are planning to come visit for a few days.
What clothes to pack for Puerto Escondido?
We highly recommend packing light as you won’t be needing any heavy fabrics like denim or even a sweater because it never gets cold in Puerto Escondido.
Here you have a list of all the clothing we recommend packing:
- Dresses. Bringing multi-purpose dresses is ideal to go to the beach and wear on top of your swimmers or to go to a nice dinner at night.
- Shorts. This garment is always a good idea just make sure your shorts are not heavy as it could be uncomfortable walking around in denim shorts.
- Skirts. For girls, this is a must to bring. You can wear it anywhere at any time and it surely will make your packing easier.
- Light trousers. These types of trousers are ideal to go out at night, whether you want to go to dinner or clubbing, this is a very good option to protect your skin from the sun.
- Sandals. A basic when you go to the beach, but make sure they are conformable for walking around as there are areas in Puerto where the streets are pure dirt and rocks, and it might be a bit uncomfortable.
- T-shirts. This is a piece you will be using a lot, especially if they are loose and light.
- Swimwear. A must if you want to swim on the most amazing beaches in Oaxaca.
- Trainers. If you would like to hike whilst visiting Puerto Escondido, make sure you have the right shoes for it.
What accessories to pack for Puerto Escondido?
Puerto Escondido is known for being a very chill and relaxed spot for surfers and travellers from all around the world. You don’t really need to bring a lot of accessories, just the basics, such as:
- Hat. The sun can be very overwhelming from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm, so if you’re planning on hanging on the beach for a while, this will protect you.
- Sunglasses. Protect and cover your eyes from the dust and complement your outfit.
- Sarong. This item will be very helpful if you go to the beach and don’t want to get burned. People usually lay their sarongs on the sand to watch the sunset. If you don’t have you can easily buy one here.
- Tote bag. This unisex item will make your life easier whilst you are here. It is perfect to carry all your stuff around.
We don’t recommend bringing jewels or watches because you might lose them. Also, wearing them in the heat is not comfortable.
Packing essentials for Puerto Escondido
There are a few products we recommend you pack because you’re gonna need them at some point.
- Sunscreen. This is a must to bring to Puerto, the sun is quite strong and you might get sunburn from even just walking for a few minutes (especially if you have sensitive skin).
- After-sun gel. If you get easily sunburned, this will help calm the skin after spending the day at the beach.
- Insect repellent. Mosquitos are all over the town and dengue fever, also known as break-bone fever, is very common in Puerto Escondido.
- First-aid kit. It’s always nice to be prepared for any circumstance. We highly recommend bringing your own medications because pharmacies are usually closed by 10:00 -11:00 pm.
- Filter water bottle. Don’t forget locals are very aware of taking care of their beaches, so make sure you bring a bottle with you to carry all your drinks around.
There are a few more things to consider before traveling to Puerto Escondido. Upon your arrival at the airport, you’ll find taxis and shuttles to take you to your accommodation.
Make sure you bring cash because drivers don’t take card payments and usually the ATMs run out of cash very quickly.
Packing list summary
Puerto Escondido is a very chill place, you don’t need to dress fancy at all. This is a surfer’s town, so the vibe is usually very relaxed.
Last but not least, you might want to consider bringing an umbrella or a rain coat during the months of May-July.
