Where can I get a motorbike/scooter rental?
There are a few different places you can get scooter rentals and we would recommend checking all options before making your decision. The options that we normally recommend are as follows.
Your accommodation
This is always a good option to explore as if you have already booked accommodation with someone they may have a personal preference for and someone they trust for renting scooters.
The advantage of this is that sometimes they won’t even require your ID or a deposit.
Facebook Marketplace
We have seen some awesome rental deals on the Facebook marketplace and we would highly recommend seeing what options are available there. Often times the deals you find there will be a lot cheaper than a scooter rental company.
Scooter rental company
There are a number of different scooter rental companies in Puerto Escondido and we have listed a few of them below.
It is important to note that you can also find scooter rental options available on the Facebook marketplace so we would also recommend checking in there.
How much are scooter rentals?
The standard scooter rental price is based on how long you wish to rent it for and where you rent it from.
Renting a scooter from your accommodation or through the Facebook marketplace can get you a daily rate of 250 pesos or a monthly rate of around 4500 pesos.
The following rates are some rates through some local scooter rental companies. If you do go down the rental company path it’s important to note that there are a lot of companies around so it’s definitely worth shopping around in order to get the best deal possible.

What do I need to rent a scooter / Motorcycle?
In order to rent a scooter through a rental company, you’ll need a driver’s license, your passport, and money for both the rental and to pay the deposit.
We would not recommend leaving your actual passport with anyone however normally they will scan it so they know who you are if the scooter goes missing or if there are any extra damages you need to pay for.
Are they safe?
If you’ve never ridden a scooter before then it’s probably not the best idea to rent one without first trying a friend’s scooter in a very quiet location. While they are fairly easy to ride the concern here is that if you damage the scooter you will lose your deposit.
With regards to the safety of scooters in Puerto Escondido in general the maximum speed limit around town on the main road is 40-60km/h so it’s a fairly safe place to ride scooters.
Important information
It’s very important that when you rent a scooter you make sure the rental includes a helmet and that you wear it.
Regardless of the standard safety reasons behind the importance of helmets if you choose not to wear one you are choosing to wear the risk of getting pulled over by the police.
The Police of Mexico is not known for being the most genuine or kind when it comes to foreigners which is why there are guides on how to deal with Police in Mexico as odds are that while you’re in Puerto Escondido or anywhere else are at some point you are going to have to go deal with them.
Wearing a helmet will significantly reduce the risk of getting pulled over and copping a fine or going to jail overnight if you refuse to pay.
The fine for not wearing a helmet has been known to be anywhere from 200 to 2000 pesos depending on the officer that pulls you over.
The other thing to do is make sure that the scooter has the papers with it as well as the police may ask you to show them when they pull you over as well.
